Band Bio

The Glance began as a collaborative effort between Travis Bunner and Greg Vieira when the two first met in August 2008. Both graduate students at OSU, Greg had been playing open mics around Columbus for about a year but wanted to work with other musicians again. Travis had just moved to Columbus and desired to create a sound similar to that of his previous folk band. The duo began as an acoustic act, playing open mics around Columbus, but quickly recruited new members to play drums and bass to produce a more robust sound. Greg put down the acoustic guitar and donned an electric. At this time, the band assumed the name, The Glance.

The members experimented with various instruments and musical styles, attempting to incorporate electronic music and keyboards. However, the group found that they were at their best when stripping their songs down to their primary acoustic parts. Therefore, they decided to enlist the help of a banjo player to enhance the acoustic element of their sound, but continued to write songs in the mold of progressive music that came before theirs. This new amalgam of musical styles has defied categorization. Neil Shumate wrote that the band "has combined the right elements and created a new chemical bond that has potential to dissolve other bands who attempt this genre of music.1" While the band has been compared to mainstream bands such as The Decemberists, Cold War Kids and Mumford and Sons, they continue to impress new listeners who find their style to be a pleasant surprise not represented in Columbus' music scene.

The Glance has replaced members, as recently as summer 2010, that have left Columbus for jobs or to continue their schooling, but in the process have picked up a mandolin and trumpet player in Tappan Kenny who also plays bass and acoustic guitar on select songs. In addition, the band has managed to replace former members with multi-instrumentalists, allowing members to switch instruments depending on the mood and needs of a particular composition. When the primary drummer, Will Fleeter, plays acoustic guitar, the bassist, Gordy Smith, picks up the drum sticks. Four members of the band play bass and banjo player Mike Skamfer is featured as the electric guitarist on one song. All of the members participate in the writing process, utilizing multiple instruments; this allows the band's sound to evolve from song to song.

In addition, The Glance's lyrics are unique and challenging. On their first EP, Matchmaker, they explore the psyche of the American citizen, often focusing on religious and social issues, individuality, depression, empathy and vanity. Specifically, in "Happiness In Pills," the lyrics explore the lives of two people that must deal with unexpected pregnancy and the subsequent reaction of the mother that has long suffered from clinical depression. Both turn to prescription medicine to numb their pain, as many often do in our highly-medicated society. "I Met My Match In The Bomb" explores the relationships between American soldiers and Afghan citizens who struggle with radical philosophies in times of constant war. The band members take their craft seriously, but the music is also motivated by a desire to entertain. Therefore, the band attempts to deal with these challenging themes with an upbeat attitude.

The Glance will continue to play shows around Columbus, Ohio in the coming months, but are looking to book gigs in nearby cities to expand their fan base. The band is about to embark on recording their first full length album and looks forward to a bright future.
